Ok Wizards, back again with another small problem. The front end of my BX23 again is leaking oil. This was repaired under warranty once just under the 24 months. Have not heard back from them on if this still would be covered under the warranty. The unit is 33 months old with over 650 hours. My ? is can I put heaver oil in the front end differential , like #30 non detergent oil or something not so expensive until I can get it repaired either under on not under the warranty.

It depends on where it's leaking from, and how much it's leaking.

From experience, most times I see a leaky Kubota front end it was from being overloaded. Not anything against you at all, these little machines will happily take waaaay too much abuse, in fact I doubt you'd even know you had overloaded it.

This usually appears as a weeping of oil around the outboard hubs or steering pivots. Where is yours leaking from?

Best of luck. ....

Don't know about the BX 23 but on the BX 22 SAE 80 or 90 gear oil is an OK lube right in the manual. I would not be afraid to put it in. UDT runs right out of mine but the Gear oil stays in . ....

Thanks Guys, Yes I know that I over load/ work mine way too often, But it has only weeped/leaks on one side of the steering pivit. I thought I read it somewhere that I could use different oil but I truthfully have not taken to the time to really search the book again, but that is what I thought I read somewhere that I could put differnet oil in place of the UDT. Just worried that this heavier oil will slow me down in the winter time here in N Ohio. ....

RLS, I'm an overly fussy person when it comes to repairs and / or maintenance, a spin-off from being a pilot, it's got to be perfect or else.

If you look at my picture # ^ you will see part of my fleet, not ONE of them has a leak in the front end, and they do not run 90W diff. lube in them. Occaissionally a leak appears, and the seal is replaced right off. It's not a huge job, but it is a bit of a PITA.

I'm a little north of you still and would be concerned about the long-term effects of running heavier lube in the front end with much winter use. That fluid is isolated from the rest of the system and so is not warmed from the engine and tranny.

If anything I would investigate some sort of seal conditioner that was a) compatible with the existing lube, and b) able to seal the leak without replacing the seal before I resorted to a fluid changeover.

Best of luck. ....
